NEVIS WEST - INDIES
|
This Island paradise had a huge abundance of exotic flowers and wild orchids, so pretty and colorful.

Nevis is dominated by Mount Nevis top of 3232 meters above sea level, the thick vegetation.
A view from Butler's House to the Atlantic Ocean right from our huge wrap around balcony. We Rented this 400 year old Plantation house and Wow it was pretty amazing. Views of the Ocean and our own backyard full of monkeys, what else could you ask for!!! And a gorgeous, large rectangular swimming pool which we used all the time.
Butler's House came with it's own African Green Vervet Monkeys. The yard was full of monkeys which the property sat on 5 acres of land. Through out the day they were always coming down from their trees and picking mangos off the ground and eating and playing with one another. There are over 22, 000 monkeys on the island and they are over running the island, not liked at all by the local people, they waste so many mango's and ruin peoples gardens. But how CUTE are they!!!!
Chattel Houses
I could have spent hours and days roaming around the Island photographing these cute little abandoned houses. Nevis has probably thousands of these scattered everywhere. |
Chattel Houses are most often associated with the island of the Caribbean West Indies. After emancipation in the mid nineteenth century, former slaves were permitted to reside as tenants on lots of the various plantations.

Continuity, tenure and "terms" were, however, subject to the whims of the landowners. Therefore the tradition evolved of building homes in a manner by which they could be dismantled, transported by simple conveyance (originally, horse drawn carts and reassembled at a different site.
