SEMUR-en-AUXOIS
BURGUNDY
Semur-en-Auxois is one extraordinary medieval town with fortified hilltop villages, glorious chateaux and ancient monasteries seem to have been perfectly preserved in a historic vaccuum. When we arrived here my jaw dropped and I was in AWE! Wow, this is one beautiful village in France! We wandered around this picturesque town. The town sits majestically on a rocky hill in a loop of the Armancon River, the massive defensive towers and high walls making it one of the most dramatic sights in the region. The fortifications are a legacy of the Hundred Year's War, when armies criss-crossed this region in the medieval power struggle between England and France.
Soon we found ourselves heading downhill on winding streets towards the river. It's so pretty with a dramatic views back over the town.
Then we drove up to the top of the town and parked the car and through more pretty cobbled streets, we found ourselves in the town's centre. We wondered around the centre and cheacking out the nearby attractions and shops then found a table outside of a cute little restaurant and decided it was lunch time and a nice cold beer.
